Tension in La Plata: Barrabrava Threatens Gimnasia

Uruguayan forward Santiago Silva revealed that he suffered intimidation from the fans of Gimnasia La Plata during halftime of the match against Boca in the Apertura Tournament 2006. The match, which took place on September 10, 2006, was suspended due to threats to the referee from the president of Gimnasia and a group of supporters.

Santiago Silva's penalty goal had given Gimnasia La Plata a 1-0 lead over Boca, but the referee decided to suspend the match after the incidents at halftime. The Charrúa forward detailed the intimidation suffered from the fans, who demanded that the team lose to Boca, a team competing with Estudiantes for the championship.

The match resumed on November 8, 2006, and Boca ended up winning 4-1 with goals from Rodrigo Palacio, Martín Palermo, and Guillermo Marino. Despite the pressure received, Santiago Silva stated that the team went out to win and that the situation was atypical in the concentration. Despite the defeat, Boca eventually lost the tournament to Estudiantes in a tiebreaker match.

Silva recalled that many players refused to continue the match after the incident, but the more experienced ones took responsibility. Despite the circumstances, the Uruguayan forward assured that the team went out to compete and not to be influenced by external pressures.
